2019 Scholarship Winners Spotlight
Maynard Jayne Scholarship Endowment
2019 recipient: Jake Hlas
Maynard Jayne joined the Iowa Cattlemen's Association (ICA) in 1977 and served as a field man for the northern half of Iowa until 1986. He then served as the director of legislative affairs for the ICA which included being the chief lobbyist for the ICA in the Iowa state legislature and its liaison to the congressional delegation until his retirement in 2006.
Following his death in late 2016, a scholarship endowment was set up in his honor through the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. Memorial gifts and a cash gift from the family of Maynard Jayne, including his wife Berdina and children Steve, Debbie and Jeff, completed a $50,000 endowment.
The endowment will provide for one $2000 scholarship annually. Recipients of the scholarship will be chosen by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. “Jayne Scholars” must be full-time students at an accredited not-for-profit college or university in the state of Iowa, and must demonstrate financial need.
Congratulations to our first Janye Scholar, Jake Hlas!  Jake is the son of Doug and Marla Hlas from Traer.  He is finishing his second year at Iowa State University majoring in Animal Science major with a focus on beef cattle reproduction and advocacy.

Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship as well as an additional $500 for completing their Master of Beef Advocacy training. The scholarship process entails a written application, an in person interview, and a presentation of a beef-related topic. These four were selected because of their knowledge of beef and the cattle industry as well as their communication skills.
